Area Information

Woodland Is Close To
Two Local Hunting Locations

The first residents of the area that would become Northampton County were Native American tribes such as Nottoways, Meherrins and Chowanokes. In 1741, Northampton County was officially created using land that was once in Bertie County. The new county was so named for James Compton, the 5th Earl of Northampton. 18 years later, part of the lands that originally made up eastern Northampton County were used to form adjoining Hertford County.

Average high temperatures in Conway reach 89 degrees Fahrenheit in July, and average low temperatures get down to 28 degrees in January. The monthly precipitation average is 3.89 inches. Annual snowfall averages 8.5 inches.

There are 10 schools in the Northampton County system that offer education to local students. Institutions of higher education that are reachable within an hour include Pitt Community College, East Carolina University, Virginia State University, John Tyler Community College, Christopher Newport University, Tidewater Community College and the College of William & Mary.

Medical services are available through the Rural Health Group in the town of Rich Square, located 6 miles away.

The Tri-County Airport also provides fast regional transportation. It can be found in Ahoskie, about 5 miles from Woodland.

Woodland is very close to hunting opportunities at both Tillery Game Land and Roanoke River Wetlands & National Wildlife Refuge, both found to the south. You can visit these locations to take aim at deer, turkey, raccoon, rabbit, squirrel, dove, waterfowl and more.

Kids are sure to love Cobler Park, an activity playground and recreational space found just off the beaten path in the north part of the town.

It's a mere 20 miles to the Chowan River, the perfect place from which to launch a boat or cast a line. For fishing fanatics, the river is home to a sizable population of largemouth bass, black crappie and white perch.

If you prefer dryer pursuits, how about a game of golf? Drive west for 8 miles to reach Lasker, where the Valley Pine Country Club awaits. This 18-hole course features plush fairways, quality greens, and scenic water hazards in the form of 2 lakes and a canal.
